Introduction

As mentioned in the “About TEFL in China” tab, there are two paths to obtain theTEFL in China certificate. The following is an introduction to the online only path, TEFL in China Online.

TEFL in China Online is an online only 120-hour EFL course developed in 2020. We have provided an easy-to-use web-based platform for you to learn about English Language Teaching (ELT) and what it looks like in China. Each unit’s content includes charts, tables, and diagrams to support the content. Also included are audios and videos from teachers who are working in China, sharing their own experiences. There are various activities (e.g. Try It, Write About It, Consider This, etc.) to help you reflect on what you are learning, to apply this knowledge, and to integrate information from other units to make sure you’re “getting it.”

It is hereby notified that the validity period of the training and examination for all new students registered will be adjusted to one year from January 1, 2023.

The TEFL in China Online course has very clear goals. By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • understand and utilize current TEFL methodology and practices in the Chinese TEFL classroom;
  • understand, describe, plan, and apply the key aspects of English Language Teaching (ELT) in a variety of Chinese contexts;
  • show an understanding through sensitivity and respect of Chinese cultural norms that factor into their classroom, school, and living contexts.

This course is an updated and expanded version of the 2011 online course and consists of 19 content units. For the main, topics are similar to the content that you would find in any university or other 120-hr online EFL course on how to teach English as a foreign language but are also designed to present you with the content necessary to begin teaching in China. You can move along at your own speed. We recommend that you allow for 5-10 hours per unit.

Each unit (except for Unit 19) has a short unit quiz that will need to be taken before you can move on to the next unit. A final exam will be taken upon completion of all the units. The final exam consists of two parts: (1) Questions & Essays and (2) Lesson Plan Practicum. You can read more details about the quizzes and final exam in the INTRO once you start the course.

Certificate

Candidates who attend the TEFL in China training will be awarded a TEFL in China certificate issued by the Foreign Talent Research Center, Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security (MOHRSS). The certificate is officially recognized as a qualification for teaching English throughout China, and it provides an excellent credential for entering the TEFL profession.
